Mathias Wirtz Obituary
Mathias Wirtz (Matt), 74 of Tucson AZ passed away on March 29. He was born in Glencoe, MN to the late Francis and Barbara Wirtz. He was married to Mary Wirtz for over 51 years. Matt is survived by wife, Mary, son Shawn Wirtz (Dian), daughters, Jennifer Wirtz (fiancé Alex Barber) with grandchildren Alexzandria and Johnathan, Lisa Schutzberger (Brian) with grandchildren Luke and Zachary, and Debra Nickelson (Doug Brees). He is also survived by siblings, Aloysius Wirtz, Helen Nicklaus and Margaret Koester. In addition to the family pets (Sandy and Cricket, and turtles), Matt enjoyed the company of countless other dogs and turtles. He has now joined his favorite dog, Penny. He also enjoyed dancing with the love of his life at the American Legion Hall. For almost 50 years, Matt volunteered with many ministries of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, including Lector, Eucharistic Minister, Usher, CCD Teacher, Boy Scout Leader, Chaperone, Knights of Columbus, outdoor decorator, Fiesta booth coordinator and anything else for which he would happily volunteer. He was a member of the American Red Cross, American Legion, VFW and Military Police Association. Matt was also a friend and mentor to many members of Saint Joseph’s Parish and this community. He graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN. Matt worked for I-10 International, Jimmy GMC, Royal Buick and other service jobs. Matt was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Army. Recitation of the Rosary and visitation will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 9:00 AM, immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 217 S Craycroft Rd, Tucson AZ. The Knights of Columbus will provide lunch for all guests following Mass. Internment of ashes will be on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at 1:00 PM in Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 15950 N Luckett Rd, Marana, AZ. In lieu of flowers or memorials, please pass on a random act of kindness, as Matt always did to friends and strangers alike.
